Displacement maps using HD Geometry?

I thought I remember reading that in 3.1 you’d be able to generate a disp map from HD Geometry. Does this work and if so what are the steps to doing so? I’ve tried multiple things but seem to just get a low quality disp map from the standard geo.

Also, anyone have a good way of converting a displacement map into a normal map? A true normal map with accurate depth. Not a bump map.

HD Geometry cannot be used for displacement or normal maps at this time.

Regarding your second question, you could try applying the displacement map to a high resolution model and converting that to geometry using the Apply DispMap button. To do this, you load your displacement map into the Alpha palette and create a blank texture. Then in the Tool>Displacement palette you set the Intensity value to whatever looks right. Make sure that your model has about as many points as the displacement map has pixels, then press the Apply DispMap button. You’ll now be able to use the mutli-res model to create your normal map.
