Displacement maps and normal map problem?

Hiya im just wondering why i cant get displacement and normal maps to work unless i choose auv mapping,

i make a sphere3d
turn it into a polymesh
subdivide
add detail
return to lowest subdivision
click create disp/normal map

now i want to keep the original shperes uvs but the displacement and normal maps come out flat. Although if i change the uv mapping to AUV the maps work perfectly, anbosy know why this is?
