Displacement map troubleshooting

Greetings,
I’ve been wrestling w/ understanding how to troubleshoot Disp Map issues and attached is my problem. I’ve sculpted the droplets on a Maya mesh that has UVs mapped, and when using these settings, the Disp Map gets distorted, along with horizontal distortion lines that appear on the Tool after the Disp Map is created. I’ve tried adjusting the DPSubPix up and down and making both 32 and 16 bit, and same problem results. I would appreciate if anyone can outline the basic settings to achieve a good Disp Map, and any basic troubleshooting guides- I have been unable to find much info online anywhere and most of it is outdated or vague, especially the Pixologic Quick Guides.
