Displacement map settings for Maya and max

Hey guys i was wondering what are the exact settings that you have to do before you export a displacement map. I wanted to know the settings for both max and maya because with the current setting i am putting the map just comes out bloby in both maya and max. Before the displacement map is exported to maya or max I make sure that smooth uv and flip v a are both on is there anything else i need to turn on
