Displacement map rendered incorrectly in MAYA

Hi,

I got a mental ray render issue with 32-bit displacement map in Maya2008. This is how I get this issue:

  1. I modeled a low-poly creature in MAYA (It got 90% quads and about 10% triangles on its paw.)

  2. export obj from Maya and detail iy in Zbrush3.1

  3. Lower the subdiv to 1 and export the 32-bit displacement map with multu-displacement3 plug-in (DE-LBEK-EAEAEA-R32)

  4. assign the displacement map back to my model in Maya, un-check Feature Displacement.

  5. Do a test render (So far so good, I got a not-so-bad result, but I am still not happy with it)

  6. select my model, assign Subdivision Approximation on it, and render it again.

  7. The model can’t be rendered !!! (The render view becomes empty.)

How come I can render it correctly without Subdiv Approximation setting on it? and why the Subdiv Approxiamtion cause the problem??

Could anyone give me some directions?
