displacement map question Zbrush to Maya

Hello.
Now I am trying to get fine details of my model that I sculpted using Zbrush on Maya. But the displacement map from Zbrush is too subtle. Plz see this displacement map that I printscreened.

(can’t see almost anything.)

This is so sutle that I have to set Alpha offset 30 and Alpha offset -15 in Maya to get good details. Is it normal or I made a mistake when creating displacement map on Zbrush? Plz give me your advice.

I am a student and I have to submit this model tomorrow. :frowning:
Thank you.

Did you make this Displacement map at your model’s lowest subdivision level?

If not, give that a try.

i hope this helps because that’s what i found out a while ago. I am really new to ZBrush and I find ZBrush has some really non-intuitive processes to it.

Good luck!

thank you for your comment, but I made this map at lowest suddivision :frowning:

Oh. Sorry, mootonmootin.

I am outta ideas then but there are a ton of people here who are much more tech-savvy who may know a solution.

Good luck.

Use this code in the multi displacement 3 plugin:
DE-LBEK-EAEAEA-R32

It should look pretty subtle, don’t worry about it.

thank you for your comment. I used the code when I am making the failed map.

Now I am browsing maps I made yesterday and I find this displacement map which I can see the details of .

Seems I happend to make this displacement map but I forget how to make it.
Isnt it normal displacement map?

Things you need to check before putting that code in Multi Displacement 3:

  1. You’re at the lowest subdivision level.
  2. In your Tool pallet > Displacement, make sure Adaptive is on.
Make sure you are checking out the right file.

If that doesn’t work, please upload your result and write here your Multi Displacement 3 initial settings (not the ones inside export options), udim, initialfileindex and such.

Zmapper can make a displacement map, just load the highest settings for Maya in, (from the load settings) and then try making the displacement map.

Finally, I get a good displacement map!
Thank you so much! I wasted almost two days…

I forgot to turn Adaptive on.
The guide book written by Scott Spencer doesnt tell me the fanction.
Anyway thank you so much. I can submit my work in time.

:+1:

zbrush does generate disp maps which are around the mid range of tonal value.

All the detail is there but 50% grey is zero, which is why in maya you need the ratio of 2.2 to -1.1 (2/-1 also) to pull shift the values to black = zero.

note: this means that negative values (pushing into the mesh) will be represented as darker than 50% in a zbrush disp map.

Also you can do this manually in photoshop, however be careful not to loose the 32bit info, as far as i know PS is able of editing 32bit maps but there is much contention surrounding this.
