Displacement in Maya 2008 and Mental Ray

Hi there i’m having trouble getting a decent displacement result in Maya 2008. I’ve looked through all the tutorials and forum posts and I can’t seem to get it right.
I’m using Maya 2008, Windows XPx64
Rendering with mental ray,raytracing,fg,hdr etc
I converted the 16bit disp map to rgb in photoshop, and also I have scaled and moved the head.
Feature displacement off…

I’m getting weird lines in the mesh, and not much detail. Does anyone have any suggestions? i’ve also tried 32bit displacement maps but no luck getting that working at all.
