Displacement error message in mental ray

Hey all,

I was trying to follow Scott Spencer’s tutorial on how to render displacement maps in mental ray and when I tried a test render, I got this error message:

“subdivision surface does not support separate displace approximation, ignored.”

The rendereed image was all bloated looking.

Anyone else run into this problem?? Any suggestiions??

Thanks a lot

What software are you using? Maya, Max, XSI? Also, what version?

I’m a Max guy, but my understanding is that Maya assigns subdivision as a separate node. Perhaps that node has adjustable properties?

Process of elimination, man. To isolate what’s causing the problem, just start removing things until you don’t get the error message - it’s either your displacement or it’s your subdivision.

The bloating is probably because you either have your extrusion strength set too high for the displacement map, your max displace set too high in your render settings, or you’re scale is way off for your scene. I can say that because the MR connections in all three apps are very similar.
