displacement artifacts

Hello guys!!

I need help here!!

For my model I need to start my displacement map in ZB using a photoshop displacement map from a scan. My problem is when I apply this map as an alpha in ZB I’ve got the 8 bits artifacts thing happening…displ_zb_8bits.jpg

so my question is how can I apply a photoshop map in Zb as my first step of displacement map and keep sculpting from there to export everything later on using MD2 without the artifacts happening??

many thanks!!

The problem is that the displacement map is an 8-bit image. This does not contain enough information for quality displacements. All displacement maps should be 16-bit images. Photoshop CS does support 16-bits, but earlier versions do not. Also, use the PSD format when exporting from Photoshop.

It’s also possible that your scanner only scanned at 8-bits. If so, there’s nothing even Photoshop can do to fix the problem.
