Displacement artifacts along seams

Hi,

I’m trying to track down the cause of some edge artifacts I am getting in the displacement maps that I’m exporting from ZBrush. Theese artifacts occur in the border pixels that are generated outside the uv shell.

My UV’s were allready assigned when brought into ZBrush (from Maya) and I used the Multi Displacement 2 plugin to export the files (16 bit 4k), using a DPSubPix setting of 3, smooth UV on and a border of 8. Any ideas as to why theese artifacts occur?

Also I’ve read in previous threads that if you generate the UVs within ZBrush you must have a 4k texure map selected otherwise it will generate the UVs based on a map of 1k by 1k, does this mean the floating point presision assigned to each uv (ai. 0.01 instead of 0.0101)?

I would be immensly grateful if anyone could shed some light on this.

Are those artifacts showing up when you apply your displacement map in maya, I have a few displacement maps that I get those on, but they never show up in max or maya, because they are outside of the uv shells, so its not really a big deal

Well I did a maya render using the map as colour input, and it looks fine like you say, however I am actually looking to render using prman where they do cause visible seams along the surface.

Well I did some tests on a simple poly sphere. Initially I kept the UV’s as generated by maya but broke them straight into 3 shells, still retainig the straight angles between all faces in the UVs.

When generating the maps all does look dandy and no artifacts turn up.

However I did another test where I distorted the shape of the mesh and uv’s so that the angles of the uv’s of a face were greater/smaller than 90 degrees.

Et voila, they turn up again. So it looks like to me that the border fix in Multi Displacement 2 does not cope with UV’s that are required for character work (that is if you work in a facility where several artists will have to work on the texture in pacages like photoshop etc.)

change border attribute number in MD2 attribute into 0 or 1.

i keep getting the same artifact as you getting when i put value more than 1

on problem now tho, with this setting, sometime the border seams become to apparent in the displacement. I am still finding the best setting using MD2 plugin.

hopes this help

i also found the setting smooth and seamless need to be turn on on the export option. and borders into 1. that eliminate the borders seamlessly.

Thanks, I’ll give that a go
