Displace along axis rather than surface normal

How do I sculpt/displace along a particular axis rather than surface normal of the mesh?

thanks for the reply.

Does this mean its impossible? The canvas is not a consistent plane. Setting the orientation using the pencil in the picker means that I can’t rotate my object whilst sculpting.

Essentially the problem is that I am sculpting a terrain. I always want the displacement (my mountain alpha brush) to be upright, once the terrain has been modified it seems impossible to keep control of how the additive brush is applied. It tilts to follow the modified surface. To paint these directly along Z (up) I would need to paint in a top down view which is possible but not the best option.

In the Transform palette Modifiers menu, turn off Xyz and turn on Z. You will then only be able to displace along the Z axis.

cool - thanks. I can see how that is probably supposed to work, but its not working for me. I’ll experiment a little bit more with a fresh model to check this.

It will only work for basic sculpting. Try the Move brush. What are you trying to do? There may be other ways of working that would achieve the desired result.
