Disp Modifier Vs Disp Obj Material

Hi guys, I was wondering if there was a difference in applying displacement via the modifier vs through the material slot, say a SSS Skin material, is there a prefered method or do you get the same results in the end.

I am using Max and using mental ray to render. Thanks

Yes there is a difference. Displacement modifier modifies your actual geometry with displacement based on a map. Displacement as a texture tessellates and displaces at render time only. Max’s help files will give you more info if you need it.
