Discussion with my friend about imageplanes to learn anatomy.

What I think is that maybe using imageplanes rather than just looking at reference wouldn’t help you as much. But I don’t know I’m no expert, just going by experience. But do you guys think? Imageplanes just as useful? It’s kind of an obvious question at least to me, but who knows imageplanes might work better for some people. Maybe whatever works for him I guess.

I definately agree with you. Seems like an imageplane would do more for you, considering you have the necessary orthographic images to work with. However, perspective references and other references are always a plus. Anything that will help you is good. They have their ups and downs.

Yeh. I recommended him (and to everyone) this:

Model from Zack Petroc’s website, one of the best tools to learn anatomy. Only for 19.99. Haha sounds like I’m a commerical, but it’s a pretty nice tool though. Has separate subtools for muscles and bones, really cool.

I recommend life study as much as possible, though 3D models like Zack’s, castings and other sculptures are also a not a bad substitute for a live model. Even models in Poser can help a little.

For more extensive study, I’ve very much liked Glen Vilppu’s instruction. Though 2D-oriented (it’s a pretty standard life drawing curriculum) it teaches students to think about the 3D forms and muscle layers quite well. It’s available on DVD from Glen’s store: http://www.vilppustore.com/anatdvd.htm
