Discplacement/Bump issue!!!!

Ok I have been tryin like hell all night to get a decent bump map out of this in zbrush. The mesh is subdivided to lvl 7. I have discplaced at lvl 1, 5 and 6all at res 2048. Each time the map comes out crappy and of course once applied to my model in max the bump looks nowhere as good as in z brush…what am i doin wrong here is 2048 still to small a texture? is that why the bump looks so bad? Im really confused here… if i go to z mapper and render a normal at lvl 1 the normal comes out clean and crisp?? and it took it all of like 20 seconds to render the map… When i discplace…im waiting sometimes up to 30 minutes and the map comes out horrible…I have tried multiple settings in the disp exporteer as well and still no luck… im obviously missing something cuz i cant see why it would be so hard to get a good bump map out of this…its just a bump map!ex-1.jpg Plz for my sanity someone point me in the right direction

well i found a cheesey work around… i just rendered out a normal map took it to PS and turned it into a greyscale…Works ok I guess but I still know Im missin something here.

Are you remembering to import your original model into level 1 again before creating the displacement map?

What are your settings in the Tool>Displacement menu when you create the map?

What are your Displacement Exporter settings when you export the map? (You are using Displacement Exporter, aren’t you?)

Sorry was away for a few days…

As far as importing my model back into lvl 1 again Im not sure what you mean? I detailed my model all the way up to lvl 7 subdivision then I went to lvl 1 then created my discplacement. I tried at higher lvls as well but got crummy results and it took forever to create the map

In the discplacement exporter i have tried multiple different settings and have tried all the scale options

As I posted before I ended up just creating a normal map at lvl 1 which took z brush all of 20 seconds to pump out and the normal looked great…nice and clean. So I took that normal into photoshop, greyscaled it and used it as my bump. These are the results… I think it works… But of course I would really like to know how it would have turned out if i could have gotten a good discplacement map out of it.1.jpg

Can anyone tell me where I went wrong here with my displacement?

After you finish your high resolution modeling you want to return to level 1 before creating your displacement map. BUT if you look closely you’ll see that level 1 has been changed by the higher levels. This means that the map that you create won’t be accurate for the model that’s actually being rendered.

Before creating the map, press Tool>Import and load your original model again. This will replace the multi-res level 1 with your original level 1 so that the map can be calculated based on your actual model.

ok ill try this out. Thx for the info.
