Disappearing tool

I was working on a creature with many horns that were all subtools.

I turned off the main body in the Subtool window, and clicked merge visible to combine the horns into one subtool (to paint w/ symmetry)

The main body of the creature disappeared, and only the horns remained. What’s more, I can’t undo.

The body is not in the tools pallet anymore. I saved the entire tool a couple hours ago, but have lost a lot of work.

Am I screwed? Why would they not let you undo something like this?

Mac vers. 3.12

Whenever I go and make a drastic change to my model like that I always save out the Ztool beforehand, make the change, then save out the Ztool again with an upped version number. That way in case something has gone wrong and I only notice it after I’ve overwritten the file again, I’ll still have another up-to-date file to fall back on.
In general it’s adviseable to version up every 30-45 minutes or so whilst working. For my current ZB project I’m up to v104 and I’m not even halfway through the sculpting process.

Yea, I’ve been a professional visual artist for many years, I know I need to save increments.

Sometimes you lose track of time when you are working, and have a system crash, and lose work. It’s a part of life.

However, since this was not a crash, I wanted to know if I have indeed lost the information, or if is is still in Zbrush somewhere.

It’s pretty silly that they won’t allow you to undo something like that.

Is there an auto-save in Zbrush (like After Effects?). I would imagine the whole save Doc vs. save Tool thing would prevent that.

Josh,

Have a look at this plugin… it’s NOT automatic-save so you still have to remember to use it, but it makes incremental saving while sculpting very easy.
