Hello to whom might be able to help:
Hardware:
Windows XP service pk 3
AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual 4600 2.41 ghz per core
3.25 GB Ram
Nvidia Geforce 7900 GS (no issues when rendering in Maya or Z brush)
80 gig sata 3 gbs (Primary Drive)
1 terabyte sata 3 gbs (Secondary storage)
Software:
Maya 2008 unlimited
Z brush 3.1
Note: My system is free of virus’s, spy ware, or ad ware : I’m a computer tech and keep close eyes on these things so this isn’t really a factor in the issue.
Basically what I’m doing is trying to work through Scott Spencers walk through guide and video on Displacement mapping between Maya and Z brush. Now it all makes sense and I’ve followed all the steps, but unfortunately for me Maya does nothing but crash over and over. I even toned down my Dis map size to 2048 with reduced mental ray settings but nothing really stops Maya from crashing. The only report that red flagged me is that when I imported my low sub D model into Maya it seems to be lacking any UV’s. Opening up the UV editor in Maya also confirms that no data exists. Now I’m not up on my UV understanding, but could having an empty UV set cause Maya to crash continuously when attempting a displacement map render ? If so what is the proper way of creating Uv’s for a model that was created in Z brush and then finally exported to Maya for final rendering. Any help would be much appreciated. The head aches need to stop!

Maybe its not the UV’s that’s causing Maya to crash after looking at the log report above. Seems to be more of a memory issue. Curious though. I have 3.25 gigs (well 4 gig is installed) and I wouldn’t have assumed rendering a dis map would require more being that so many people have success with it. I mean does everyone have 16 gigs running 64 bit OS environments with NVIDIA Quadro’s? Seems to me that most people wouldn’t have that kind of a rig. I could be wrong. The dis maps I’m using are between 2048 to 1024. The poly models are at max 1 mil but I experimented in lower sub Ds and generated different dis maps accordingly but still the same thing, Maya crashing. It only seems to have issues once inside mental ray trying to render the dis maps. On the norm mental ray has always worked fine. Am I missing something?
