Diabolos

Hey everyone, long time visitor, first time model poster here. My name is Pierre Thériault but i call myself Art-Machine online. I work at Ubisoft Montreal, same place as those talentd guys Lil’sister & Sebcesoir. Been playing with Zbrush for quite a while but only recently am buckling down and planning complete ‘serious’ models. Well now that the intro’s outa the way …

The first WIP I’m sharing with you is to be my take on Diabolos, one of the less classic Final Fantasy series’ summon creatures. If the lack of detailing in the following shot doesn’t make clear its WIP-ness, the lack of a head just might … :stuck_out_tongue:

Typical red wax presentation - GO!

Why am I posting a headless WIP? Well since the head will be started only after the body’s done, I wouldn’t get to share this progression if i waited to have a head on it!

Anyway, so far i’ve only gone through detailing from the toe to the knee. Have a closer look. (Note the under-the-foot detail that nobody will ever see hehe.)

A couple design notes : Diabolos typically uses black hole, gravity & reality distorting type moves, which is why vortex shapes will be a prominent theme on this redesign. The torso which is very devoid of interest right now, actually will have quite a lot of crazy spiral shapes to come. I need to subdivide one more level to have enough rez to do that, but need to wait for a hot new PC coming later this week first

Anyway, hope youre as interested to see the results as I am! More to come later.

Cool design and detailing progress! Nice to have another Ubisoft pro to watch.

Very Cool Work Art-Machine! I love the design… and now the head! :+1:  :+1:

Nice start I want to see the updates

Thanks for the comments guys  Piz, lol yeah i realize the “body first, head later” order is probably throwing people off. I’ll at least put in a basic shape there next update so it doesn’t look so weird.

Ok ok David here’s an update, please don’t beat me

The legs are now ‘finished’ up to the hip connecting tissue, at which point i couldnt resist atacking the chest with those oh-so-fun-to-sculpt swirlies. Put it in a quick pose (hovering with the unmodeled wings) as per David’s personal review, though it could still be better i’m sure. Also the hand proportions were adjusted somewhat.

And of course a closeup of the swirlies.

My new PC has made this model so much more enjoyable, a real lfe changer. For anyone with an aging pc that chugs to keep up with your sculpting, i highly recommend getting a modern machine (well at least if zbrush is an important part of your life and or work). Working in zbrush is even more of a pleasure now that it’s buttah-smooth.

Cool swirlies!

Out of curiosity, what are the base specs of your new PC? I’m kinda miffed that since I had Vista installed as an OEM I can’t upgrade to the 64-bit version for free, like retail. The memory ceiling of the 32-bit version is a drag…

Hi Marsyas, Yes 32 bit ram limits are lame, and 64 bit well, 16 TERAbytes of ram max? That makes me drool. However techy friends at work highly suggest avoiding 64 bit OS because aparently it would be buggy/crashy as hell and i think would require 64 bit versions of aplications too (though Z3x is both a 32 and 64 bit version in one). At least thats how i understood what they said, correct me if i’m wrong.

As for my machine , the basic rundown is :
CPU : Intel Core 2 quad Q6600 2.4 ghz
Ram : 4 gigs DDR2 800mhz
Video : EVGA Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX

Testing shows my polycount limit is about 11-12 mil before getting the ram error and crash in Zbrush. Sure would be nice to be able to use more than 2 gigs of my ram on it… The important part though is that even around my poly limit, sculpting is still nice and smooth, except undos which hang for a few seconds of compressing mem.

Thanks for the info, Art-Machine. Yeah, I’m not sure the trade-offs would be worth a 64-bit OS. I do tend to only use it for my graphics apps and the internet tho…

I can’t really complain about ZBrush’s performance… I just tend to push it to the limits no matter what. :stuck_out_tongue: (I experience the undo hangs too).

Good Art-Machine!

I think is becoming very very nice… I love the “baroque-sque” Style… also I love the volumes…

A very inspirational mood… :+1:  :+1:

Well finally mister Diabolos has grown a head. Figure it’s a good point to do an update, even though the head and body are still not ‘finished’.

Since the last update, the hips structure has been detailed as well as the connecting tissue to the legs. The sides of the torso have been worked on. The arms are still very untouched, and even need to be reposed since a lot of distortion is now aparent, as well as a lot of other minor bugs from quick and rough posing.

Had a lot of technical problems with a bad head basemesh that ended up exploding far into the work. Had to restart from scratch with a cleaned mesh. So not a lot of progress overall in all this time.

Anyway that’s it for now. I think the next update will be a finished body/head sculpt, and then time to move on to wings.
