detail lost in displacement map

Greetings,

I’ve had some problems with displacement maps. Recently I created a model with 6 subdivision levels, when I generated the displacement map I lose a lot of detail like pores,etc. To generate a good disp. map I have to increase the subd. levels ( like 2º level of 6 ). If I make that the number of polys increases too. For example, my low model has 3200 polys, if I increase de subd, level to 2 the model increases to 13000 polys. there’s anyway to create a good displacement map without increase the subd. levels?

Two likely possibilities:

  • Your map size isn’t sufficient to support the level of detail that has been sculpted. A 1 million poly model should have a 1024x1024 map. A 4 million poly model should have a 2048x2048 map. A 12 million poly model should have a 4096x4096 map. Use the size closest to your poly count.
