Desco Diving Helmet

HI! This is a work in progress, still need to work on denting it up, add the hose, and a couple of more pieces. Lots of welds to do yet. This has been created 100% in Zbrush. I wanted to force myself to problem solve only using Zbrush, even for the primitives. I am fairly new to zbrush, so go easy on me. Critiques welcomed! Special thanks to G.Callahan for his help along the way. Also J. Drust, love the video tutorials, couldnt have done it without you!

Nice work!..how’d you sculpt all the hard surfaces?

Great start. I tried to force myself to create a hardsurface machine gun completely in ZB the other day… i failed miserably and relied on the old 3D app crutch. Look forward to seeing this progress. Do you intend to create the entire suit?

Also, what exactly are J Drust’s vid tuts. Ran a search but nada.

Cheers.

theres some good ones here, but also a great insect tut he did comes with zbrush. Gives you alot to learn in one tut. I will post my bug too, its at home on my HD.

@Adam - I used the high polish alot, alot of masking, and scaling to get surfaces flat. Also neede to unify meshes quite a bit. The metal airtube with the faucet handle was created with z spheres, as will be the hoses. Planar flatten helps with the hard surfaces too. Had to learn how to boolean, to get the apron piece (2 cylinders, and then a sphere). ALOT OF PROJECTION MASTER!!! This was one of the best ways to addd hard surfaces, and detail.

Hope this helps…
Brian

I think he means Joseph Drust, as in this Youtube video tutorial for Zbrush mat caps: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJj4sLtp9tA

This helmet is VERY good actually, it doesn’t look like beginner work. :+1:

nice work, can even see the welds

Almost done. I plan on painting it in Zbrush too. The plain block will be my barnacle wood. Plan on adjust the weighting at some point.

Great, go on!
I wonder to see the picture growing.

Nice work! I like the Material.

Just the barnacle laden drift wood it rests on. Anyone have any suggestions on painting it?desco2a.jpg

Anyone have any suggestions on painting it?

Same as anything else, just get lots of really good references. The model looks great, man. Well done.

Very cool!

Great job on that diving helmet…:+1:
In the Matcap repository in Z Brush, there is a matcap called Fatmiri’s Rusted Grey Metal…When you use it and then press the BEST in the Render section at top of screen…the matcap gets a really nice rusted and pitted look to it…might be useful to you on this helmet.don’t know, but I thought it worth mentioning, just in case you weren’t aware of that matcap and the way it works when you press BEST in the render section…
Looking forward to seeing where you take this piece next.
My first impression when you said you were going to put barnicles on the old piece of wood it’s sitting on, was that it would be under the water in the deep somewhere…then I thought maybe at the waters edge with the wood half buried in sand at end of an old decayed and weathered pier piling…maybe with the tide and surf creeping up on it…Just throwing a couple of thoughts your way as to it’s placement…ANYWAY.Just brainstorming on my part… .It’s looking really good so far…keep pushing it further…:+1:

Here you go spiritdreamer, I liked your idea of the sand and surf. Still need to work on the sand a bit , and the wood too. Any critiques? Still plan on painting, and maybe a 3d print? Going to try and get a turntable of it posted…thanks for all the love guys…

Superb… 100% zbrush? waw…

Great job with it’s placement on it’s new home and resting place…Looks like a tailored fit…Nice composition…:+1: …No crits from me…
Passing thought… Maybe just a couple of clumps of those barnacles/mussels attached to the wood…just to give it that sense/feeling of time…
Love the way this is coming out…Inspiring work and technique…from where i’m sitting anyway… :+1:

i just saw the same helmet in London museum on Science … looks very similar. good work

He he , thanks Sebcesoir! I did your tut for hard surfaces to learn how to do this just a couple of weeksago! Great tut! Kudos from you means alot!

Very cool! :+1:  .

Hey guys, anyone know how to save a truntable render? I try to and it says I’m missing QTFC.dll? Anyone have any ideas?
