Dendrobates

I know, another 3D frog! I love them so I just had to do my own. I wanted to start with something somewhat simple for my first post. However, the texture ended up being very complex for me.

I took this picture of a collection of rocks I set up in a pan in my living-room. I used zspheres to model froggie.
I rendered out layers in Zbrush 4 and did touch-up in Photoshop (such as painting his toe underwater). Thanks in advance for any comments or critiques!

Great work, I love it. Best frog I’ve seen on here so far.

Like the color. Looks like she will jump from the monitor  :+1:

Thanks so much! Any ideas on how to make this more realistic or naturalistic would be greatly appreciated.

I would recommend having more lights to hit the outer edges of the model or you can even modify your material to spread the specular highlights better. Lastly, The eyes can use a bit more reflections from the environment it is in. Keep going!

Hi. Thanks for the recommendation. I added quite a bit of specular that i think establishes the light source better now and helps separate him out from the BG.
I tried to put a natural reflection of the rock bed with a sky, but found it distracting since his body colors are fairly complex.
Anyway, its there but very slight. How do you think i faired with your suggestions?

Much better:+1:

cool. thanks!

The added specularity helps. Looks good.

Did you say that was a 100% ZBrush render?

If so, then this is absolutely Top Row, seriously.

Excellent frog, excellent render and comp.

5 stars.

great work!!! :+1:
(it is a ZB4 render ?) :grimacing:

Almost perfect.

  1. Specular on the frog’s body is too regular - if you’re comping in PS then maybe do a dirtier, (possibly some cavity detailing) less specular render and blend some of that in with this

  2. Specs of dirt and grains of sand/grit; just a few here and there again would break the illusion that he’s too perfect, and would ring true of the real world

  3. The highlights on the eye seem wrong? One sun…behind the little fellah, right? ! …some reflection in the eye would help too. (Must admit, I’m a bit confuse by your light sources?)

  4. reflected light back up from the water and rock beneath him

  5. the specular on your stones is making them look polished and not wet.

My tuppence worth; hope there’s some useful ideas, if not then please ignore

hi. the frog is a 100% zbrush4 model and render but a lot of work in photoshop. i didn’t know how to create a reflection in zbrush, so i just duplicated the frog upside down and rendered that out separately for comp in photoshop. is there a way to do raytraced reflections in zbrush?

great suggestions. i made some subtle changes. more dirt (3 or 4 hits on the back and a couple more on the head) and made the specular less even as well. i added a tad of reflected light on the belly.
now the eyes have me stomped. they do give away an ill conceived light source. but i’ve tried many options and haven’t been happy with them. i think i might just be willing to say that the highlights are from wet shiny stones in front of the frog giving the eyes glints. the only true light source of course is the sun behind and to the right of frame. so far, i haven’t liked the eyes with a strong reflection of the rocks and i also haven’t liked them with the highlights removed or shrunk too much.

now for the rocks! those are real. as i stated in the first post. this is a photograph made in my apartment with a zbrush frog added.

thanks for all the comments!

Nice achievement keep it coming! :bulb:small_orange_diamond:bulb:small_orange_diamond:bulb:small_orange_diamond:bulb:

did a quick & dirty paint over in PS

eyes with a subtle reflection
diminished front light source/specular
more grit … as example, but could use more still as it works so nicely on that front elbow
Also, the highlight is so bright on that front stone that it detracts from your frog… worth taking it down (even if by hand)

just thoughts; sorry if the art director in me has a habit of coming out  i know, i know … shut up already!
It’s a fine piece regardless, congrats

thanks man. much better eye reflections. i just copied yours outright. tried to create them in zbrush but wasn’t happy with em. added a bit more pimple action and took down the rock. thanks for the all the input!
