Demystifying the 32-bit Tiff Displacement from Zbrush

Hey everyone, I was wondering what is going on with the 32-bit displacement that Zbrush spits out. First of all, as is, the file gets rejected by Maya and Modo right off the bat, doesn’t like it. So I convert it to a 32-bpc/ RGB image and save it as an .exr file from photoshop CS2. Modo and Maya loads that in fine now. I haven’t rendered it in modo yet but in Maya 2012 V-RAY I get this posterization in my displacement.

Does anyone have any hints on why this is happening? I don’t have this problem with the 16-bit greyscale displacement images.

Example images/settings are at the bottom of that chaos group post.

Seems I was fooled by Maya’s error messages. Don’t convert your zbrush tiffs to exr guys. You’ll get posterization in your displacements using Vray.
