Deleting parts of a curve (Curve Segments)

I was following a zClassroom tutorial vid (Molle part 2) and there’s a part at 8:15 about deleting a curve segment where Joseph explains to get the Topology brush and just hold Alt + Drag over a curve segment to remove it. This didn’t work so I went online to try to find an answer and it says that you should now use the ZRemesher Guides brush. The problem is that neither of these are working for me… Using either method either results in the curve trying to do something wacky to the topology (in the case of the Topology Brush) or just deleting the ENTIRE curve using the ZRemesher Guides Brush.

What could I possibly be doing wrong? I can’t exactly provide images, it’s basically: Solo a part out of a mesh, apply a Stroke -> Curve Functions -> Frame Mesh, then Alt + Drag over a curve (should delete a segment but instead removes the entire curve).

Edit: It seems to have to do with the green dots generated for the curve, his has one at every vert whereas my mesh only has 1 to complete a circle. Also, I’m not sure why but his curves seem to automatically predict that his brush is going to clip and so it keeps the curve but spaces his geometry out, whereas (now that I finally generated a curve by making green points at the edges) in 4R7, the brush just clips right through the geometry… At any rate, I know there are newer videos but this one is now impossible to follow with the instructions he’s giving.

Here you can see, 4R4 frame mesh (from the video) vs 4R7 frame mesh… the green dots are no longer placed at every vert. Also once I apply the insert mesh brush created from the first part of the tutorial, they’re either too small or they clip. Anyways, it’s not a big deal, it may be discussed in one of the later videos and I’ll have to watch them all to see but it was frustrating to get this far and then not be able to continue with the video.

That’s odd.

I was able to do what you are trying to do by using the zremesher guide brush by adding curves through the corners before deleting the segments.

Kind of a pain compared to the video.

Yeah the ZRemesher Guides does work for deleting now that I see that it requires the green points… I’m now wondering mostly how to get the green points at every vert like he does in that video now (Like the first image I posted). I pushed on and eventually finished the tutorial:

but it still wasn’t quite 100% of the results Joseph had. I’m mostly wondering how on earth he got the |Stroke -> Curve Functions -> Frame Mesh| to give a green point at every vertice now. It’s like you said, in the video you can see that it seems a lot easier. I ended up doing something similar to what you did but by just dragging out one giant line at each corner outward and then deleting it so that a green point remained, but even then… after applying an insert mesh it has serious clipping problems that aren’t apparent in that video (and I have a feeling that having those green points may be important for things like that). And while it (the clipping) can be mostly repaired with positive Embedding, that is still far from ideal when you want a perfect curve.

So what I ended up doing for the image above was actually dragging out a curve of insertmesh manually so I could get the tutorial done… but it kind of defeats the purpose a bit…

Edit: I also notice that the video cuts at 7:38 where his brush size changes (edit in the video). Another thing that I find very interesting as well though is that his brush size adapts to the curve when he hovers over it. I would like to know how that’s happening… I feel like there may have been some important information cut out there in the video :frowning:

Bumping this topic:

Is there a way to paint away a part of a curve by brush? Only delete certain segments?

If I choose Zmodeller brush and hover over a curve, enable “Delete” and “Curve” I click on a segment and the complete curve disappears and not the single segment alone.
