Decimator Plugin

Sorry about my silly questions,
just start with Zbrush a few months ago.
My High res model is done, i need to decimate it cause i must export to another app for retopo.
about decimator plugin, never use it before:
how can understand when the number of polygons is to much and i need to decimate? Can you give please some numbers as reference to start with?
Decimating my model:
wich % of decimation i must to start with? Let say begin with 50% and so go down or up depending on visual results, can you give me please some % numbers as general reference?
Thank a lot and sorry again about my beginner questions and my poor written english.

if you hover your mouse pointer over the tool-thumbnail in the tool-palette, you get the polycount numbers of the selected tool to show up (if you use subtools, move the mouse cursor over the subtool-thumbnail in the subtool palette)

that´s how you get the polycount information that you need

next you have to decide how many polys you want; let´s say your mesh has 1 mio polys and you want 250000 you could decimate it twice with each time 50% (1 mio > 500k > 250k)

it´s important to first preprocess the geometry (preprocess current) and then decimate; again, if you want to know the polycount, move the cursor over the tool.

i always make a copy of the tool before decimating it

hope this helps

Thank a lot,
as example:
a model, a human subject that has 1.000.000 polygons, in order to be used for animation it must be decimated to how many polygong?
What i’m asking is a generally reference to start with, some numbers with aproximation to start with.
Hoping i can make you understand with my poor english
Thank

This simply depends on your needs. If you can export a model into another program and it works just fine, you don’t really need to decimate. If the program can’t handle all the data or the OBJ filesize is getting too massive to work with (something to consider if you need to send files online), then decimation can help you.

Also keep in mind that you may not even need to decimate when it comes to retopology. Skin wrinkles and other pore-level details are not needed, so if you have several subdivision levels of the sculpt, then you can just export those and use them instead. If you used dynamesh all the way to the end on the otherhand, you’ll have to decimate.

Decimation Master will NOT produce a good result for animation.

Start with the default value, and adjust it from there. If you think you can squeeze more decimation out of it with an acceptable surface result, go for it. If you lost too much detail, ease back.

Thank a lot, i begin to understand a little more.
when is the case to use Decimator.

Why decimator do not produce good result for animation?
Can you explain please generally?
Thank!

for animation you need an organized mesh, which means the number of vertices should be as small as possible while the accuracy of the model should be as high as possible;
it is much harder to animate a character with 100000 vertices than to animate a character with 1000 vertices, as a matter of fact.

decimation master tries to reduce the polycount while mantaining the shape as good as possible - but it does not “know” which parts of your model will be deformed during animation (and thus need vertices to carry out the deformation)

compare decimation-master-decimated meshes to organized meshes, which are used for animation, and try to imagine that you would have to deform/animate it.

creating a good organized mesh is something you don´t learn over night - it takes quite some time and try and error and back and forth to get the best results.

sorry for asking in your thread, but i think it still one topic.

when i want to pre process the mesh, it always say computing, please wait…and it stuck my zbrush, at the end i need to go to task manager to kill zbrush process.
i never can use decimation master plugin…
