Decimation Master VS ZRemesher - which is better? trouble with poly reduction here

I know it’s kind of a broad statement. But I am having trouble getting ZRemesher to obey the target poly count I am giving it. I am telling it to remesh to 3k polys but it usually gives me 6 to 7k polys.

Base model. 510k polys:

Decimation master decimated to 3k but looks bad:

ZRemesher remeshes pretty nicely but poly count is around 6k which is too high

You need to turn off the Adapt button for ZRemesher to more closely match the target poly count.

like marcus said, turning off adaptive will get you closer to target…but it may not look acceptable enough.
if you are setting it to 3k and get 6k with adaptive on, try setting it to 1k and see what you get.

i would make a duplicate, get it down to about 3k using zremesher, with or without adaptive on, just to get the general shape. then subdivide up to about the same poly count as the original and project the detail from the original to the duplicate. then bring the subD level down to 1 and make a displacement and normal map. that should give you something close to the original.

^ Thanks, I’ll try the subd technique, that sounds like a good idea, however I’m working in the unity engine making a game for ios and android so I can’t use displacement or normals. I’ll post on how this turns out.
