Decimation Master Question

Hello!

I am working on a project for my thesis, which is about 3d printing wearable costume pieces for the stage. I did a very rough draft of a project to get price quotes on 3d printing services, but I am encountering an issue with the decimation master, which it seems I should use before I move onto the 3d printer exporter.

Basically, I preprocess the mask subtool (That I made from extracting a masked off area of a 3d scan of my face, which appears to me at least to be watertight.) and then when I tell it to decimate the mask, it removes almost all of the polygons completely. I’ve attached pictures to show the issue I’m having. I’ve done some searching around and I cannot find a problem like mine and have NO idea what to do about it. Thank you in advance for your time and attention!

First, you need to update your Zbrush. It’s free to upgrade to 4R7.

Is that dynamesh? If not, try dynameshing a copy.

Check the mesh integrity and fix mesh, weld points, close holes before decimating.
You also might want to make a copy and use Zremesher and project detail back.

… but definitely update your Zbrush.

Thank you for your help! I had dynameshed it previously when working on it, taking it into maya and rotating it so that it had a more predictable xyz axis and bringing it back seemed to do something strange to it, dynameshing it again solved the problem. Thanks so much!

You exported a dynamesh and brought it into Maya? :grimacing:

For future reference, you probly don’t want to do that. Dynameshed geo is pretty much a Zbrush only thing.

You have all the tools you need for setting the orientation within Zbrush (in the Deformation palette).

Good luck with your project. :+1:
