Decals have black outlines

I am trying to texture a hawaiian shirt using Zbrush. I have a cheesy palm tree I’m trying to place all over it using DragRect and Projection Mapper. The problem is, I can’t seem to get it properly transparant. The decal is a PSD with a transparant background, but ZBrush gives it a white background. It’s a little better if I give it a black background in Photoshop and set it to Transparant Material in ZBrush, but then I stiill get these jagged black outlines around the edges.

Is there any way to get true, working transparancy? I’d really prefer to use Zbrush for this; it’s much easier to get precise decal placement.

Create your PSD using pure black (0,0,0) for anything that you want to be transparent. DO NOT USE ANTIALIASING in your selection options or anything else when doing this. Antialiasing by definition averages the values at edges. This then turns pure black into something else, which is then no longer seen as transparent by ZBrush.

Another option is to create an alpha and then use that as a stencil in ZBrush. That may work for some of your decals.

Thanks, Aurick. I actually hit on the alpha idea while waiting for the post to go up. It’s not perfect, but it’s close. I’ll keep the antialiasing thing in mind for the future
