de-saturating colors on mesh?

Hey all -

I polypainted my whole mesh…but realized I want to achieve a more de-saturated look. Is there a way to just de-saturate all colors at once on my mesh without having to repaint everything?

Thanks!

The selected material plays into this. Not as far as I know other than converting polypaint to a texture and modifying it, then reapplying.

This little plugin will do it, though make sure you read the notes below.

To install:

  1. Unzip the zip file to your Desktop.
  2. Open any folder created by the unzipping and locate the VertCol.zsc file and VertColData folder.
  3. Copy the VertCol.zsc file and VertColData folder to your ZBrush 4R7\ZStartup\ZPlugs64 folder. This installs the plugin for 64 bit.
  4. If you want to install for 32 bit, copy the VertCol.zsc file and VertColData folder to your ZBrush 4R7\ZStartup\ZPlugs folder.
  5. Restart ZBrush.

You should have a new sub-palette in the Color palette called Color Utilities. This has a button and a slider. With a polypainted mesh selected, set the Saturation slider to a value to increase/decrease Saturation then press the Adjust Saturation button.

Notes

  • Back up your work before using the plugin.
  • There’s no preview, so you’ll need to experiment to get the results you want.
  • Meshes with over a million polygons will take some time, depending on your system specs.
  • Be careful with repeated use on the same mesh as desaturation with a high value and then increasing saturation again can give unexpected results (colors will tend to go red). It’s better to undo the changes and start again.
