David Krentz Dinosaurs: 3D print edition

Hello all

I have not posted on the forum for years, I’ve mostly been busy doing storyboards for feature films so there has not been a lot of time for sculpting! For the many of you who don’t know me, I’ve worked as a character designer on many dinosaur themed movies. Some of them are Disney’s Dinosaur, Walking with Dinosaurs 3D, Dinosaur Revolution/Dinotasia ( also a a director on those) and a myriad of others that were put into production and then killed with the executive asteroid strike.
Anyway, on the day of Jurassic World I thought I’d post some of the sculpts for 3d printing I’ve been doing in the last few years. Some of the reconstructions are a little out dated but thats what you get with science.

I’ll load these a little at a time. First up is the T.rex… Big surprise. Needs some feathers. The prints are from Moddler.com. Resin Castings are from The Alchemy Works.

If you are interested in buying any of these you can find them here.

This dinosaur is a Troodon. For those of you who might not know, pretty much ALL “raptors” had some kind of feathered integument like this.

This guy is the bizarre Therizinosaurus. It stood nearly as tall as a T.rex and its claws were a meter long.

Nice!

hey david!

these dinos makes me want to do one myself. they are really beautiful sculpted.
-do you have any pointers of how you did the feathers on “troodon”?

Thanks for the reply Ramsus. The body feathers were created with a simple alpha. I had to really sharpen them up so they would print. Leg, wing and tail feathers were created separately by sculpting one high res feather, and then decimating it and duplicating it several times on the actual model. Without decimating the model became very heavy very quickly. I had to make them pretty tick as well so that the printing and casting could be achieved.

This is the wacky ceratopsian called Kosmoceratops. I’d love to resurface this guy for a nice CG rendering, but for a 3D print the scales read fairly well. I tried to do a rotary gait ( like a camel or elephant) on this model instead of a transverse gait.

This is a Spinosaurus based on the work of Scott Hartman and Jaime Headden. There is new material on the dinosaur that might put this version into question. It probably spent most of its time in water eating fish the size of cars.

wow! awesome sculpts! what type of printer did you use? the prints look great!

Very nice work indeed.

Could you share the alphas you used for the Spinosaurus skin please?

Hey David, awesome models !
