Dandumundi -Digital Sculpture
Dandumundi is a fearsome forest entity preserved in the folklore of central and eastern India. Tales of this being are particularly prevalent in the forest-fringed regions of Odisha, southern Jharkhand, and northern Chhattisgarh. The name “Dandumundi” is derived from an ancient tribal dialect, in which dandu signifies a stick and mundi denotes a body or being. In local belief, Dandumundi is depicted as a humanoid demon with a single leg, moving through the forest with a pronounced, limping gait.
It is said to shun daylight, remaining chiefly active at night or amidst dense fog. According to traditional narratives, it trails solitary travellers, woodcutters, and hunters. Some accounts portray it as a malevolent force that slays humans and devours their flesh. Others maintain that it primarily preys upon animals, harming only those who venture deep into the forest without due reverence or permission.
