Cylinder Smoothing?

So i have a mesh that i created in another modeling program as a lowpoly mesh, for this example i will use a barrel, that has a cylindrical shape which also has other parts that have flat surfaces.

How can i smooth only the faces of the cylinder without smoothing the edged of the hard/flat edges?

Whenever i enabled smoothing while subdividing is smooths EVERYTHING and if i disable smoothing while subdividing then go back and smooth a masked portion the parts of the cylinder that are touching the other parts of the mesh stay hard/flat.

Here is a picture for reference:

The Barrel was subdivided to 1.7 mil polys WITHOUT Smoothing, the one on the right was subdivided to 1.7 mil polys WITH smoothing enabled.

The only parts i want smoothed are the faces of the cylindrical shapes and not the flat edges of the rings like the below image:

tool.geometry.crease

you need to crease your mesh. Polygroups will probably help you as well.

You’re awesome, thank you!

I already had my polygrups setup but i did not know about creasing.
