Custom UI failing miserably...

Trying to add custom brushes (MTB set of brushes)… I enabled Customize the UI, then I open the brush palette, load in the brushes one by one from the download folder, and drag them down to the bottom bar that appears…

Do the store thing, when I restart, the bruishes are no longer in the palette and the bottom part of the UI where I had placed the custom brushes are empty…

I am slowly losing my patience… can someone tell me my fundamental error, I can think of a couple of reasons why it isn’t working, but they’re just guesses.

Thanks for the help and the patience…

Thanks, yes, that is where I am dragging them from… but when I store the config and restart later, they are gone again… when I enable customize, there is a dark empty spot in each place where I had dragged them earlier.

To be clear, I am able to load them from my download folder, and then drag them to the UI from that side bar you hilighted… they are not there when I restart, even when I make sure I click Store Config.

If they are custom made brushes that are not in the startup list, then their slots will be empty in a custom UI until you load them from Lightbox, at which point they’ll appear in their designated interface location.

To get custom brushes to show up in a custom UI upon startup (theoretically–Ive never tried it) add them to your Zbrush startup tools. Generally only something you want to do with a tool you will be using all the time. Otherwise, better to just store them in the lightbox files and load on demand.

As Spyndel stated, try putting your custom brushes in your “ZBrush 4R6\ZStartup\BrushPresets” folder first. It is not advisable to put more than 20 brushes at one time in that folder though.

So… once I start putting custom brushes on the UI and then store the UI, I need to save everything as a Project? Because it seems they are linked to the specific project I am working on when I am customizing…?

…how far back did you follow that thread?

Okay, no luck…

I’ve tried putting them in ZStartup in the BrushPresets, and yet I still cannot get them to stay on the UI bar… when I go to Enable UI editing, the only thing where I put the custom brushes is an empty black rectangle.

Is there a video that could walk me through this?

I followed it as far as it would go, and none of the suggestions worked.

I have felt your frustration before.

Right now I would just be infinitely happy if the brush I load into the Brush Palette would be there when I started ZBrush.

  1. Open Brush Palette
  2. Load Custom Brush from Downloads
  3. Save as to the BushPresets folder’
  4. Quit ZBRush
  5. Restart ZBrush
  6. No sign of the custom brush in the Brush Palette

Got it to work… at least the brushes so far, which I’ll chalk up as a WIN… found this thread and that did the trick:

http://www.digitaltutors.com/forum/showthread.php?30274-HELP.-some-brushes-and-material-wont-store-in-the-custom-UI.

I’m actually a subscriber to Digital Tutors and if you can’t see it, here are the two posts:

HELP. some brushes and material wont store in the custom UI.I have played around the custom UI a bit in Zbrush. I stored the config and save the UI . But for some reason when I restart zbrush again, some of the custom setting are gone . For example, I load some brushes from the root folder and make them into my custom UI, they are gone when restart the zbrush.Same happened to the matcap material I download from zbrush central. Is any way I can store them into my custom UI then I dont have to reload them everytime I start zbrush ??Thanks

Re: HELP. some brushes and material wont store in the custom UI.Hey I was having the same problem. but i think i figured it out. You have to make sure the brush/material etc. is in its appropriate folder in the the zdata directory

C:\Program Files (x86)\Pixologic\ZBrush 4R6\ZData\BrushPresets

C:\Program Files (x86)\Pixologic\ZBrush 4R6\ZData\Materials\Startup

hope this will help

They will be at the end in the Brush palette and not in alphabetical order.

Until I did the step just before your last post, they weren’t ANYWHERE in the brush palette, not the beginning, not the end, not in the filtered list, nowhere, it seems they have to be in the ZData folder, NOT the other folders that were suggested.

And Thanks for all the suggestions!

PS once I put the custom brushes in the appropriate /ZData subfolder, they DO appear in alphabetical order. Go figure.

I’ve been using ZBrush since version 3.5 and I have never had any problems and have never had to put anything in the ZData folder. I would suggest you don’t start adding a lot of things in that folder, but hey, it’s your funeral.

Since nothing else did anything at all, at least I can make it to the Funeral. I mean, I tried the super-convoluted series of actions to try and get it to do something as simple as remember what brushes I loaded into the palette between restarts and if it’s good enough for Digital Tutors to finally get it to work, All Hail Hydra, I mean DTutors.

Just for the record, if you are referring to the link you provided above ( http://www.digitaltutors.com/forum/showthread.php?30274-HELP.-some-brushes-and-material-wont-store-in-the-custom-UI ), I think that was just 1 guy who only has 1 post on a public forum, and not Digital Tutors.

And yet… it’s the only thing that actually worked. Ha!

Cheers, ya’ll have a good one.
