agreed, carry on, lets see something really cool!
enjoy the blood, her face looks a lot better. no CC at this time. =)
I’m about to start making the EKG monitor, the chains, and the body parts.
I’m debating over how much detail I want the severed head to have. I don’t intend on a closeup of it. Only the nurse herself, and then the whole scene, those are all I’m printing out…
I wish I hadn’t lent my ex roomate my extra 2GB of RAM, damnit. Then these things wouldn’t be an issue. The scene is starting to get a bit… Heavy. Time for DECIMATION MASTER, M’thinks.
So I began with this…
[
]
The assets are done, now I just need to detail and paint them, then take them into photoshop and add the blood effects n stuff…
The blood in the shot is stand in blood, I was just doodling around, trying to see what looks best… the bed is not going to look like that , blood-wise, dont worry.
I removed the floor as it was too distracting, opting to make the entire scene black and then if it seems to fit, I’ll put in a background… We’ll see.
Hope you guys like it!
I can’t sleep… So I’m working on the model. I’m hoping to finish her before my wedding day, otherwise its going to be a week before I can get back to her!
I have four days left. I’m pretty sure I can do it!
But she’s coming along!
I’m just curious about something… Is there anyone else who thinks of this place as extremely competitive? Since I’ve arrived I’ve been compelled to tell people how much I enjoy their work, especially those with novice ability, and I’ve only recently begun to receive pleasant feedback… ONLY after meeting a certain public criteria… Am I the only one who finds this slightly unfair?
Don’t misunderstand, I know there are many out there who mean well, but well meaning and actually helping are two different things.
As I write this I find myself somewhat ill over the fact that my personal choice to conform to the conventional standards of this forum are the only reasons I’ve not been harassed any longer. What kind of way is that to express ourselves?
Even after explaining how much I admired so many of you, you still chose to ignore that and focus on the fact that I, at the time, did not care to hear what you felt you had to tell me… And still it was MY ego that needed to be kept in line?
I’m completely calm and very aware that someone out there will have the same tunnel vision and killer instinct akin to PIGGYs, but that is the price I pay for writing what I feel and think on my own thread started by me…
Before anyone attacks… Remember that this forum is about our work… I don’t know when why or how this specific forum became a place to inform others of their flaws and shortcomings… But some of us, namely just myself, because I can’t speak for anyone else, thinks it would be much better to simply appreciate the images we see.
I am not better than any of you… I’m just a self taught guy who loves to make things he imagines… And when we tell others their work is no good or needs more work… Who are we? I notice a lot of you assume that when someone doesn’t want crits its because they think they are the best… Why can’t they just have their own artistic journey to chase and a desire to share what they see and create along the way? They mean you no harm and or disrespect, and you still choose to look down on them. To be confident in our work doesn’t mean we are above crits… So please don’t perpetuate that negative stigma. We just know what we personally want… Which is all art is. Self exprssion. Creativity for the sake of creativity as we find it to be enjoyable is all we are responsible for.
I could never look at another persons work and say “I’d do this” or “that looks wrong”… Because I don’t know the skills the person making it posesses… And I certainly don’t know what is going on in their head when they make their work. All I know is it sort of stings when work is not seen as part of us, but rather, as a product to simply showcase. Even I do this sometimes and it shames me.
Anyhow. You guys are all awesome in your own right. Even those who will choose to hate me for speaking my mind.
Ill post more soon.
So showed the current WIP to my boss, and his eyes bugged out. It was hilarious.
I’ve never done a gore scene before, so when I handed him my phone to look at my work, he hilariously responded, “Holy ****!”… It was a great moment.
Okay guys, here’s the finished piece. It’s just a personal work, so if you don’t like it, you don’t like it.
[
]
well, whats worse? no responses to your thread or people encouraging you to improve your work?
personally, I would rather have people point out where i could do better because if they don’t even want to wast their time to do that then the work must really suck. “personally” after posting on several forums like this over the past many years. no response means that your work is not appealing to the audience. what is “appealing”? thats open to the viewer to decide. if i tell you why i find it not appealing, im not putting you down. im just informing you what it is that keeps me from liking the image.
I think you could have gone much father with this image.
Everything is floating in space? the character had a off center of gravity, making it look like they are falling over? this isn’t that hard to fix and would greatly improve the image “IMO”
the shock factor isn’t enough for me to enjoy looking at this image.
I can understand what you mean, Mcgregor. I probably could go farther with this piece, but no work is ever really done, just overdone, or not done enough, which you feel is the case here.
I have nothing much to say on this end. As I said, if you don’t like it you don’t.
I can live with that, as I do like it, and its just going into an album for me to look at at the end of the day. And in the future ill look at it and cringe over how crappy it is then, but till then, its fine enough for the one who created it, just as your work is fine for you.
As for the question of what I’d rather have no responses or the opposite… I need neither. I know my work is not liked much by many of our esteemed posters here due to its poor composition compared to their comps… But I can’t do much about that. Nor do I want to, for that matter, for one reason… I have no reason to seek their approval. I just work on my stuff… Upload it on ZBC and then go on with my day, occasionally checking out a post or new picture and getting jazzed over the persons talent.
My main reason I get so frustrated is because a bunch of posters are too concerned with how their work is viewed and since I don’t care how others view it, I get attacked.
In the end, if I can inspire one friend or family member, or anyone who just likes being creative, then my job is done. And I do that evert day in the real world… So any posts telling me why my work is unnatractive to a stranger on a forum is relatively unimportant to me.
Bottom line, your a good guy for trying to show me my errors in the hopes of helping me grow… But I got where I am on my own… And while that may be much slower than many of you… I still did it without help… And I will continue to do it without help because I don’t need help. All I need is my wacom tablet, inspiration, and my poor form sculpting and I’m happy.
Come on guys
Is there a real necessity to post strong language in order to communicate your ideas!
cubanb82: your work is some how different from other … Newton was different and he changed the whole science So don’t listen to insults and try to focus on what the masters are criticizing you about.
Best of luck to all Zbrush users
OMG funniest thread EVER.
Anyway ,I might be wrong, but it seems your zbrush renders donthave anti-aliasing. Im sure that it would improve your pictures.
Did you use any reference? For example looking at movies and games such as in this case the Hospital sections of Silent Hill when it turns all hellish and those freaky nurses are around.
Things like that are great for inpiration and will help you improve and develop too.
But you should really try to take pointers from the guys on the forum, since it is a great place to learn, plus you don’t have to take all they say on board.
Anyways, wish you all the best on your wedding day.
Dude, this is the most friendly cg forum on the internet, im not kidding, if you had try some other popular cg forum, mostly the ones game art related, you would have been eaten alive :D. Its just that you are a begginer, thats all, i have seen many threads like this in the last few years ;] Unles you are really open for critics youwill get harsh rsponses ;D
wow, try harder, lets compere him to Jesus next time …
i dont think he needs that much support ;]
Oh yeah, the models stand out too much compered to the background, make the bottom a lot darker in ps or some other gimp ;]
I keep wondering, “wheres the rest of him?”
I reckon there needs to be a “show your first” thread, we all got em
First off you guys are all really awesome artists, and yeah, even I don’t think the Newton analogy was too accurate, lol… but thank you for standing in my corner. I don’t have many that do, and I can live with that.
Here’s some background info on me, so you guys can get a feel.
I started using MAX in 2001, Zbrush in 2005, and photoshop in 2007. I come from a long line of tenacious people who insist on doing and or learning new things. Growing up with heroes like Dennis Muren, Phil Tippet, Michael Lantieri, and naturally, Stan Winston, was what brought me to where I am. I set out and taught myself each application, drawing from their inspirational work and when I had the basics down, as far as how they each function, I created my youtube tutorial page. After a few years I’ve had doors open for me due to the page, and I’ve been so fortunate as to have people tell me that my lessons have helped them immensely… so I know I’m not a novice… I’m just not you guys. One young man was a finalist in a CG art competition in his home country and even thanked me for getting him there, and countless others have thanked me in their student demo reels… and I’m proud of that.
But as you will likely say… those who can’t do… teach… and perhaps you are right. I CAN"T do what you guys do because I don’t have a classical training or school based education that many of you do, and I certainly didn’t have anyone telling me how to go about it… I go by instinct… I wish I had someone sitting next to me teaching me about Mental Ray’s GI, but I had to learn the hard way. :/… but it was going to be learned, plain and simple.
The purpose of your (the viewers) posts is to be that void filling voice, I assume, however, I am not here for that guys. I am honestly just here to share my own poorly constructed work. I have no choice but to say it that way because you guys will not let up. You all insist that since I’m here I need to listen to you all…
Outside of this forum my work has been extremely well received and it’s allowed me to work on some cool projects and I have a gig working on a short for Cannes film festival… yes… me, the crappy CG artist… why? I have no idea… just because I don’t give up I suppose.
However, this thing about being attacked for not taking crits… what is with that?.. “without crits, you can’t grow”… “If you take crits you will not be attacked as much”… why? Okay, I can understand if I was on some deadline and I needed some sort of commercially viable composition within a month for some reason… but that is not the case…
Here’s my day… I wake up, make my food for the day, work out, go to work, come home and sit at my computer and think up something I personally want to see, or have had in my head as a blurry silhouette… then I proceed to make it, and if there’s a topic I can share with my tutorial subscribers, I share it… it’s that simple on this end…
All you guys see is… “Here’s a guy who foolishly shares his unfinished work… hmm… lets tell him what we don’t like about it so he can become successful in this industry and or appeal to us and the pros”
The above is not my priority guys. Plain and simple. If I were posting pristine work and said… it’s just some personal work… you would all leave me alone… but unfortunately for me, my work isn’t perfect, it’s just a reflection of me and what I personally want.
Please, plleeaase get this concept, because I’m going to keep posting my crappy work.
I’ll just leave you guys with this…
“I do my art for art’s sake on my own time. I spend as much time as I want on it because it’s art for art’s sake and it’s not for a dollar. It’s not with business parameters.” – Stan Winston
Here’s my latest project…

I’ll be posting more on the creature thing in a bit. I’m turning him into a tutorial piece at the moment.
Hooray! I just got commissioned to do some character concept work!
So I might also add, that my strengths are creatures and not humanoid things… anyhow… I whipped this up as a tutorial piece for my subscribers and thought I’d share it.
Took about three hours to complete from start to finish… yes yes… it’s crap.

UPDATE: Link to the Concept composting overview
No Mcgregor, but I head that is an awesome place to put up work too. I’ve seen some killer ALIEN stuff there.
I’m making a 3d piece based on my favorite ALIENS comic book cover from when I was a kid. I love all things ALIEN!! I have too much memorabilia! lol
The body was a combination of Zsphere and 3ds MAX bod and spline modeling. The crest and hands and head were created in MAX.
[
] It’s obviously not a 100 representation, positioning wise, but it gets the point across… or will rather.
Still not done, but wanted to share some of the process… as usual.
