CTRL-drag symmetry masking?

When in symmetry mode I can paint more than one mask section at a time, but when dragging from outside the object, I don’t seem to be able to do this. So for example if I had a cube and I want to ctrl-drag over two opposite sides and create a symmetrical mask, how would I do that? Or can I?

Thank you.

Hi meshlife,in transpose mode x? symmetry click on model and drag will give
nice effects but 2 alphas?also pump up the polys for more mask detail then
select lower if need be

Right. But when dragging from outside the tool, symmetry mode does not work.

any alpha selected while in sym mode will ctrl mask with enough polys-you can size brush and get sym masking on your model

ctrl masking outside of your tool is canvas based and is not able to work symmetrically.
however, there is usually no need for this anyway, if you wish just sculpt on one side of your tool, when done, mask that whole half and use SmartRysm in the Tool: Deformation palette.
alternatively you can also set up polygroups and hide and mask those for more control if necessary, hands, arms etc.

Thank you for the replies (everybody); this enabled me to accomplish what I need.

I find the best way to mask with symmetry when drag selecting is snapping to an orthographic view by holding the shift key… then select away.

Another way I achieve precise symmetrical masks is by poly-painting high contrast colours, then under the masking drop down, mask by hue.
