Crustacean Head

Hi everyone,

Been too long since I posted an image! I started doodling a couple nights ago on a head model and this is the direction it took. It kinda resembles a turtle head.

I stopped before I put all the detail I wanted to because I may start over and try to do a full model of him and render him in Lightwave. Or maybe I’ll just try to finish him up in ZBrush since the head is already done…

Now I just gotta figure out what the rest of him looks like!

I took the rendering and did a little postwork in Photoshop.

The skin shader is based on Socar’s with some modifications to color, cavity settings and diffusion curves.

Cool creature and nice render :+1:

Wow, that looks cool already. Is that a LW or a Zbrush render?

This is a ZBrush render with a few minutes of post work in PS. Saturating the colors a little bit more where the light starts to wrap around the model helps fake the sss effect a little more.

I may try different colors on him. The flesh color should probably go a little more aqua.

I had a few hours this past few days to do some more detailing on this guy. Still need to add a lower eyelid and detail the deltoids and chin a little more. Also, gotta come up with an eye texture. Any other suggestions?

I abandoned the flesh look and went more reptilian. At first I thought the flesh look would be cool and different, but after a while, I just had the feeling it wasn’t working.

Here’s some additional views of the throat and top of his head. I think I need to work on making the throat more asymmetrical.

Time to get cranking on the torso next!

I really like the texture you put on him. It’s really coming along nicely!

Well here I am again still messin’ with the head. I really need to move on to the body, but I figured I’d post an update anyway.

Theres 2 materials shown here. The normal textured material and the fake sss material. I rendered both the sss pass and the normal textured pass separately and tried to merge them in Photoshop. After taking that same sss pass and making several layers of different strengths, I got something worthwhile I think.

All rendered in ZBrush with some postwork in Photoshop.

K…Now I gotta force myself to leave it alone and move on to the next part - the body!
