creating fins and spikes on a dragon

I have some basic knowledge of zbrush and am trying to create a dragon. I thought I could use the insert mesh curve brush to create the line of fins along the back of the dragon, but since it’s based off of a single fin, they of course all look the same. I want to create a more random look so I’m wondering if there’s another technique (aside from the insert mesh curve) to do something like this? Or does it just come down to manually modeling each fin? Thanks.

You can create variants of the one and save it as an insert multi mesh brush, switch between them while inserting. Or possibly just mask the parts where you want the parts, invert mask then extrude/inflate/push/pull or whatever for for final shapes. Lots of ways.
