Creating a mask without masking through the entire model?

Hi all, just wondering if there was a way of creating a mask on the surface I am looking at in the viewport only, without masking all the way through the model? I just want to be able to mask the visible polys. Is that possible?

Cheers for any pointers.

Have a good weekend everyone!
Steve

You could use BackFaceMask (Brush>Auto Masking), but it won’t work with Rectangle, Circle, Curve or Lasso strokes. It will work with the remaining strokes. If you are going to use Rectangle, Circle, Curve or Lasso strokes, you will have to hide the back side of the mesh first, or delete the masking on the back side (Ctrl+Alt).

Have you hidden portions of the mesh/model? Sometimes it’s quicker to mask all and unmask selectively and invert the mask. We’re trying to guess what you’re doing or trying to do.

Thanks Zber2 and Doug.

The model in question is a bit of a tricky one to hide or mask the bits I don’t want - hence the question about whether I can just mask visible faces which would be the ideal solution to my particular issue.

My model is like this…

I want to mask just the back bit…

And not mask the other side like this…

I am sure that I can hide/mask to get the job done with some fiddling, but I thought I’d ask if there was an easy way! I am finding that Zb is one of those apps that if I hunt for a solution (or ask in this case!) there is always is a way!! (A case in point - I just discovered I can do screengrabs in Zb!!)

Thanks again for your thoughts
Steve

The lasso might make hiding the back easier. Otherwise, you could try Projection Master. Turn off fade and doublesided, lay down some black polypaint where you want the mask, then pick it back up from projection master and create a mask from your polypaint.

Thanks Cyrid, yeah the lasso select did the job. Thanks for the other idea - I’ll need to look into that a bit - not used projection master yet!

Thanks
Steve

Masking by color or poly groups also works well, lots of options.

Thanks Doug
