create alpha

Anyone else have this problem. The create alpha in the masking palette does not seem to work, at least not as intented. Mosting of the time it just creates a border arount the masked area. Tried it on several meshes with same result, also tried it both at work and home with same results. Use this feature to reload alphas all the time.

Operations involving deriving textures/alphas from applied masking dont appear to be functioning at present.

A work around for this would be to invert the mask on your object, and fill it with black (color>fill object). Then only the original masked area will be filled in with polypaint.

Convert that polypaint to a texture in the texture map palette, and export that texture. That texture can then be applied as a mask via “mask by intensity”, or converted to an alpha, and then applied by using “mask by alpha”.

If polypainting your object would be problematic for some reason, you can always CTRL-z back to just before you did so once the texture is exported. It can then be re-imported at your leisure.

Jeeez!
Thanks Spyndel, for the workaround. Bit cumbersome and not sure I will use it as often as before. Too bad pixologic released it in that state, at times I can’t figure out the logic behind some of the things they do. I sure they were aware of this problem before they released the update (for me at least none of those masking options work correctly) and they still went ahead and released it in that state. Too bad there is no backward compatibility either, I would not have minded going back to 4.0 for certain tasks like this.
Thanks again.
