create 3D doilie from photo?

Here is a photo of a doily, from which I would like to create a 3D object. Is this possible in ZBrush and, if so, how would it be done?

Thanks.

edit: I found this cubicmesh 2003 plugin. Does it work in 3.1?

Kidding. You might be able to subdivide a plane to around level 6, use your doily pattern as mask, then extract the doily out as new geometry. Then just give it some thickness. Honestly though, I wouldn’t do something like this in ZBrush. I’d just use an alpha to fake it if I could. If I HAD to model it, I would make one section of it (it just repeats radially) in 3dsmax using shapes. Add the radial clones. Then I would attach all the shapes and use a bevel modifier to give it thickness.

As dustin says using subtool extract is the best method. The ‘make3D’ method used by the script won’t produce as good results. It would be best to posterize the image to two values, black and white, first and save as a grayscale photoshop before importing into the Alpha palette. You’ll need to divide the plane so that it’s poly number is about the same or greater than the pixels in the image (so for an image 1000 x 1000 you need at least a million polys).

Another way, depending on your requirements, is to make a simple version of the shape and then use the image as a texture map with black set to transparent.

  1. make it into an alpha
  2. take a plane
  3. tool/polymesh it
  4. geometry/divide to 7
  5. geometry/delete lower
  6. UVmap/uv map it with uvp
  7. masking/mask by alpha
  8. masking/inverse
  9. masking/hidept
  10. geometry/delhidden
  11. subtools / extract
