Crazy spikes when i Subdivide?

Hey people,
Im having a problem with an OBJ i imported, its a bunch of cylinders from XSI…
They import fine - but when i subdivide this happens ? Anyone know what is causing this and what I can do to prevent it ?

Heres what the problem looks like:

There are a few common causes for the spikes. Most likely it’s a scaling issue. Import a fresh instance of the OBJ, go to the deformation area and hit Unify. Now try subdividing.

Thanks for the reply Dustin,
Ive never used Unify, i tried it out - but the problem is the tool i imported is a piece of armor that needs to be relative to the rest of the model - so when i use Unify the armor piece scales to the size of the character.

Could the problem be triangles in the cylinder obj ? I dont get any triangle message when importing the OBJ though…

Look at the model in the Tool>Preview window. Is it really big or really small? If so, you can use the Tool>Deformation>Size deformation to temporarily resize it. Then before you export out of ZBrush again you can resize it back. Because you’re using the Size deformation instead of Unify, you can return to the exact scale you’d started with.

For example, if you do size -50 to shrink the model by half, then size 100 will resize it back to normal. If you do size -50 twice (or size -75) to reduce it to 1/4, then size 100 twice will return to normal.

Of course, the easiest is simply to adjust your other app’s import/export modifiers so that your model will export at a size that’s more suitable to ZBrush and then import back with the correct scale.
