Crashing Out of 3.5 When Masking Figure OBJs

Hi everyone,

I’m finding a consistent problem whenever I try to work on an imported OBJ of a premade character figure (Daz figures, Miki 2, etc)
Everything looks fine until I try masking an area to manipulate the pose. If it doesn’t crash out immediately, it certainly does if I subsequently try to soften the edges of the mask.
I’m only a beginner in ZBrush, and dont want to use premade figures at all once I get more familiar with what I can do, but I’m concerned that the same problem might arise if I build fairly complex characters of my own. That said the default polygon count of these figures is not high in terms of what ZBrush can handle.
I wonder if the problem might be that the whole figure comes in as a single subtool?
I have worked successfully on a pre-posed imported character, but of course that makes for difficulty in making props without being able to use symmetry.

Any suggestions would be most welcome

As far as the subtool issue you may have to export the parts out individually then re-assemble. Now if I remember right, you have the option to export a poser model with all the subtools intact. I have done this before i think. I have poser 7 standard edition.

Thanks Gridlost  I tried exporting from Poser with the original polygroups option selected and reassembled them in ZBrush, and that seems to have done the trick. Masking no longer giving me grief.

Sometimes I have similar crushes even with clean, but partially hiden geometry. So I think zb has some bug when you trying smooth masked region of parially hiden geometry or geometry that contains holes.

Thanks Velesius  I think I’m going to play around with creating my own figure for a while - it might avoid some of these issues, and be more satisfying in the long run.

what i like to do with poser is import just the head or upper body and use those for impressions with projection master. Daz’s Vicky is one of my favorites.
