Couple of Questions re Importing Photoshop PSD Files

Don.jpg

Hi all,

(1) When importing a PSD image file (or any image format for that matter), is it possible to set it so that zBrush auto-adjusts the document size to match the dimensions of the PSD file ?

(2) When exporting an image from Poser, a selection is saved as part of the PSD (see image). To see this, create a simple image in Poser with (say) Vic3 against a gray background, and export as PSD. Then, go into P/shop (or compatible program, e.g. Ulead Photoimpact) and load the selection. You will see “marching ants” around the figure. Is it possible to likewise detect this selection when importing the same PSD file into a zBrush document, and to be able to lift it out into its own layer ?

Thanks in advance.

regards,
Andrew

  1. Import the image as a texture, then press Texture>CropAndFill.

  2. ZBrush doesn’t look at layers the same way that Photoshop does, so it can’t be done the way you’re thinking of. On the other hand, if you used Photoshop to give the background a color of 0,0,0 you could then use texture transparency in ZBrush and apply the texture to a Plane3D. When selecting the area that will be filled black, do NOT use any antialiasing or feathering. Those would cause the edges to be shades of black, rather than pure black and you’d have problems with the transparency there.

Thanks Aurick. Re (2), I was having trouble applying the texture to the Plane3D.

I had no problem with (say) a sphere, after having imported the texture (from Poser) and then creating the sphere object. However, when I created a Plane3D the texture wasn’t applied. What am I doing wrong ?

You might like to try my plugin Image Plane which makes importing an image onto a plane3D easy.

Thanks, marcus. You sure have some great time savers there.
I’m still having problems though. The image speaks for itself … how can I fix this ?

What’s happening is that ZBrush is reading every pixel that is absolute black (RGB 0,0,0) as transparent. To get this to display correctly you need to edit the picture in Photoshop. I’d use the Magic Wand or the Select Color tool to select the black on the hair and then fill with almost black (RGB 0,0,1 will do). The image will then display correctly in ZBrush.
