Cory Lewis Sketch Book

skeleton_sculpt02.jpg Have been wanting to start a sketchbook in zbrush for some time now. All crits and comments are more then welcome. My goal as a sculpture in zbrush is to create solid form and to be more clear in my sculpts. Seems like this goal is the same as for my drawing and painting.

Nice solid form and volume, and great character in your character…:+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

Hey man the design is solid, looks like it could turn out to be a very cool character. One piece of advice would be instead of pulling out those spikes with snakehook or whatever tool you’re using, you should actually model them. By this I mean either go back to a base program like Max or Maya and add those large spikes to your base mesh. You could also just retopologize the base mesh and add them in this way.

This should not only increase the amount of detail you want to get out of your models because of cleaner topology, but it will also make it much easier in the long run when it comes to texturing hi-res detailing.

Hey guys, really appreciate the comments and the advice. I will certainly try it.

Can’t say enough about zsketch. Years ago for one week of the year i used to go sculpt the figure with artist Michael Shacham. He is really awesome, very classicly trained. Using zscetch makes me think of that time because of how you lay these tubes down. I always say it can’t get any closer to clay and then it does…LOL

Yep, zsketching is one of the cooler innovations in the realm, of all time pretty much. In the realm of trying to bring the feel of working with real world sculpting techniques into the digital environment. You can tell it was a total “brainstorm” moment when they thought of zsketching. It answers to alot of problems and if you know how to approach it can add unlimited potential to your creativity while sitting down at the monitor and just “going for it”.

Cool looking beastie there as well, like his S shape posture.

Pretty pumped about the transformer game coming out soon. Hear is a paint test of a transformer design i am working on. Started as a zsketch and a quick paint over in photoshop. I plan on posting the sculpt in more detail when I finish it. [transformer_testpaint01.jpg]

please bare with me, i’m just figuring out the posting thing. I feel like an idiot.

HA

Hey

Hey guys, posting up some shots of a bust I’m working on. I really am trying to figure out how to render in z-brush, any helpful tutorials would be appreciated. I used decimation master to import into Maya but my results were horrible. I’m also still plugging away on that transformer sculpt which i will be re-posting soon. Pretty excited about how tight the forms are coming out. [gendethPic1.jpg]gendethPic4.jpg

Hey man i dig your skeleton warrior dude. Quick crit on the last image. If a guy is that fat he won’t have that kind of muscle definition especially on his sides. His serratus anterior will not be that well defined because he will be covered in fat. His arms can be pretty defined still but anywhere close to his mid section is going to be less defined.

I really like this work. Great anatomy on that big guy.

Maybe make the tips of the branches on the tree aim downward toward your main subject… the human figure …This will add a visual flow in the composition, acting like directional visual arrows leading into the main subject.
Kind of like the way an upward jet of water in a fountain travels…leads your eye upward, and then back downward…creating a sense of flow, motion, and rhythm.
Just a passing thought that may be useful to you…

nice, I’ll take the thought.

Hey guys so I have been tooling with that rock and have to move on. Started the sketch of the tree and i’m pretty tempted to sculpt a character in it. Like an insect monster. For now it remains a tree, the last time I did something like that a good friend and animator tried to kill me…lol. Any how let me know what you guys think. Oh and a thanks to Spiritdreamer for the advice, definitely trying to work that in.

Ok so I broke my plan today and I went back into the rocks. I discovered a method of masking to pull out the geometry to create more structure. I’m glad I kept fighting cause I’m much happier than I was before. I also have started to sculpt the monsterish tree on top of the structure. I’m thinking of the tree as a creepy, disgusting bug clawing itself up the structure. Lots of weight and good force within the structures.

In the back of my mind I’m starting to think of surface texture and ways to stamp that on using alphas. Subtle on the rock and possibly aggressive on the tree. I want to see what happens when I start hacking into the tree more. Anyhow suggestions would be appreciated.

OK, so in between an outstanding Talladega race and The Rangers kicking ass today I have been plugging away on the tree. I’m enjoying myself and I really do think I could spend several more days on this guy, noodling away. I’m really excited that it’s turning into this dynamic character. Let me know what you think, I’m considering having more roots in particular one just coming through the rock and wrapping around somewhere. I might have to come back to that idea later.
