My thoughts on “Coronation” for Beta!
• Name – Coronation
• Place of Discovery - Mali, West Africa
• Period of the Piece - Estimated between 13th–17th century CE
• Origin of the Piece - Dogon culture, West Africa
• Historical Value of this Sculpture - This typology of figure and its attendant posture bears considerable ethnographic and ritual significance, frequently associated with ancestral veneration, fertility rites, and acts of spiritual meditation. The symbol “Z” denotes an emblem of power, venerated by two attendant figures, thereby underscoring its authoritative potency. It further signifies the enduring reverence accorded to such a symbol from antiquity.
• Symbolism and Expression - The elongated torso, attenuated limbs, and pronounced breasts denote fertility, nourishment, and the generative potency of womanhood, whilst the rigid frontal stance conveys spiritual authority and contemplative stillness, suggestive of ancestral presence.The central “Z” motif is deliberately exaggerated to signify an intrinsic locus of power, articulating the latent force within and humanity’s enduring inclination towards its veneration.The abstraction of form, in preference to anatomical realism, reflects a conceptual rather than naturalistic idiom, privileging symbolic resonance over physical verisimilitude.
