Constrain sculpting to a single axis

I want to sculpt out the general forms and layout of a terrain in Zbrush. Create the general forms of mountains and valleys, etc. Say for instance, a 512x512 terrain. I then want to create a displacement map in Zbrush to import into a program like Geocontrol 2 or World Machine 2. I want to make sure that the terrain I create has no overhangs, caves, etc. since heightmaps can only represent one height per x/y coordinate. Is there a way to constrain sculpting to the y axis so that there is no lateral movement of polygons (i.e. they can only move up and down)? Also, would creating a displacement map in zbrush be the best way to get a heightmap into Geocontrol or World Machine?

Transform>Modifiers, X, Y, or Z constrains vert movement to a single axis.

Spyndel, I am forever in your debt. Thank you very much!
