Constant Crashing that increases in frequency

Hi All,

I’m working on some models, SubD to between 4 and 16million polys for polypainting - spotlight. My pc is good enough to handle this without issue but I keep getting crashes.

I’ve rebooted my pc and started working on my model. I may get around 40mins before the first crash. It just freezes, the spinning circle appears. I can wait for ages, check cpu usage etc - nothing. As soon as I click on the window, boom. disappears without a trace. no error message or anything.

I reload. Start working, maybe get 20 mins before crashes again. Keep reloading and seems that crashes become more frequent until it shuts down almost as soon as I load. Leave it for a bit and I might get 5-10mins.

Using win 7 : Z 4R4 P2 . 16gb mem. 64bit .

Its becoming very frustrating especially as I have a deadline.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

You should evaluate your workflow. Create a part of it and render it out to a layer. Save that. Build up your layers to get that render you want. You may not need half the number of polys your trying to work with if done differently. HTH

Not really sure what you mean by that…

I may not have been to clear. My base mesh is a single surface around 4k polys. I’m subdividing it to the millions so that I can use spotlight to paint rgb and then create a texture from polypaint.

How will using layers help?

I wasn’t getting crashes but machine performance seemed to be sluggish. See the comments made to me in this thread.

You could break the model down into smaller parts (sub tools) or poly groups. Only sub divide to the point needed on each. If higher detail is needed, use localized Hi Res. Render those bits out to layers.
