connecting body parts

Hopeless n00b here, attempting to make my first real sculpture. Up till now Ive just been goofing around and figuring out what tool does what.
I’m working on a character model, building her from the base up. I’m using the basic tools since anything I make with the zspheres looks like a stick figure someone vomited onto my screen.
She’s sitting on a flat surface, and with this ive encountered a major issue: her arm. One arm is going to be away from her body, touching the flat base I have her on, but i cant get it to connect smoothly at all. there’s a huge gap between her arm and her hand that just refuses to fill in. Is there any way I can squeeze some filler in there and finish the connection of arm to floor?
