Ok guys, well I am looking into doing my own 3D animation videos. And after some research, I am still confused. I do not know the difference between ZBrush and 3DS Max. Can a person model, rig, and animated in ZBRush? Because the textures, and characters all seem so much more in-depth with Zbrush. Or Does the BASE model have to be modeled in 3DS Max, then transferred to ZBrush for more in-depth detailing, then back to 3DS Max for rigging and animation? Please help. I would like to start on my own. I have always been interested in 3D Animation, and finally have the funds built up to begin on the journey.
hi , tho you can rig in zbrush (only for posing) there has to be inverse kinematics and keyframing for true animation - 3dmax -
lightwave - zb - all have a learning curve , to me a better workflow would be zb to maya or poser to learn animation.
in poser there are pre rigged characters that you can use and edit the rigs on your models and study the settings.
then theres cost - poser http://poser.smithmicro.com/poser10-poserpro2014/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Poser10&gclid=CJyZ-7_N_LcCFUye4AodyjAAEg#pricing and zb
about a thousand - 3dmax or lightwave = thousands - good luck
Zbrush is a tool for asset creation that can be used to increase the visual fidelity of your work inside of a more traditional 3D application (Maya, Max, Modo, etc). While you can animate in Zbrush it isn’t nearly as robust as the tools used in an actual animation software.
There are a couple of things to take into consideration before spending thousands of dollars on software though.
- Will you actually enjoy doing this?
- Can you make money to recoup the cost of the software?
- Are you doing this just as a hobby?
I would recommend trying out Sculptris and Blender to get started. If you find you enjoy the free tools that you have access to then picking up some professional software might be a good idea.
Sculptris is a free sculpting tool from Pixologic and Blender is a free open source 3D modeling and animation tool. Neither will cost you a dime and you can see if you like doing this before committing to it.
Ok. So I will be able to create the designs/models in Sculptris, and then transfer them over to Blender to animate… correct?
And I am going to be doing this as a hobby. Not a career or part of my education. I just want to start doing animated little shorts on YouTube as well as coming up with some unique technology designs on my own. I appreciate everybody’s answers. They have been extremely informative!
correct.

That is something that I want to do. Or something similar to it. Would I be able to create the environment, character models, animation, lighting and everything through both those programs?
Yep.
You might want to pick up gimp as well. It is a free photoshop basically.
Here’s a little inspiration for you. Check out these two.
both of those were really good. I appreciate you sharing those with me. I’ve been trying to find some good videos. Thanks for all of the wonderful answers guys! Thank you!
