Confused about Dynamesh

Hi,

I’ve been trying to understand the boolean operations of Add, Sub and And for Dynamesh, but I’m getting some strange behaviour from ZBrush. First, I tried inserting a cube (using the InsertCube brush) into a dynamesh sphere. I cleared the mask and clicked on “Add” in the Geometry menu. It added the cube to the sphere as I was expecting.

Next, I added another cube and clicked on “Sub” - but it added the cube, not subtracted. I tried the same thing and clicked “And”, and the cube was STILL added. What am I doing wrong here?

Anyway I tried adding the cube while holding the Alt key. When I released the left mouse button, the sphere was masked and the cube was unmasked but its normals appeared to be facing the wrong way - it looked inside-out. So I cleared the mask, and clicked on “Add”. This time the cube was subtracted. Is that correct behaviour? Sometimes ZBrush so freaking confusing!

As far as I know, the ‘Add’, ‘Sub’ and ‘And’ Dynamesh buttons don’t even work. At least, I never got them to work either. However, there are ways to do those operations without having to use those buttons. I would suggest that you watch Modeling a “Radio” Part 1 and Part 2 by Joseph Drust. He does a nice job of explaining boolean operations using the ‘And’, Sub’ and ‘And’ icons on the subtools in the Subtool palette.
Regarding the ‘normals being flipped’ when inserting a negative mesh. I don’t really like the way that is done either as I like seeing the whole insert. I mean, I know that I am inserting a negative mesh when I’m holding down the ‘Alt’ key. Duh!. It’s just to indicate that you are using a negative insert. A way around that is to turn on ‘Double’ in Tool > Display Properties’ before you use any Insert brushes.

Glad I could help!

My apologies, zber2, for not replying. I forget my manners sometimes. The videos were very helpful. Thanks.
