compound eyes

hi Folks,

I’m working on this zsphere grub model and want to detail the little lenses in the compound eyes.

I have tried using inflatdot which gives good results (see picture) but is laborious and a little irregular because each lens must be positioned individually. Ive also tried using sphere3D additions inside the projection master which turns out the same way.

I would prefer to clone a small group of lenses to cover the whole eyeball because that would be more regular and quicker. Doing this with the clone tool in projection manager clones the eyeball surface too. Does anyone know a good way of doing this?

Thanks,

podria hacer un zoom a los ojos?

I ahh don’t get it :frowning:

I believe he is speaking of the ‘small’ raised areas on the larger orbs:‘eyes’…look closely… he’s looking for a way to do it all at once, vice each individual ‘lens’…like a flies eye maybe?

How about trying to lay out your own dot pattern as a texture to create the lense pattern, then use the texture on the eyes as a bump map…no positioning headaches if you use a tile pattern I’m guessing…

Using the SphereBrush with ‘grid’ as the stroke is quick, ajustments for size and spacing are available, although I found that the spheres when squished together on a flat plain tend to become square…but by adjusting the spacing you can get some interesting effects. The spacing does not appear to be adjustable across different axis though.

I tried it as a radial setup (rings within rings) and it worked as well, although again you are back to cloning and positioning… I did find some interesting effects here also, if you scale one set (smallest or largest) and adjust the scale by moving your mouse, you get to see transformations that are reminiscent of water flowing between rocks.

the brush is included here, adjust for your needs if you can use it…

btw-nice depiction, do you have anything to place for scale?

I am new to zbrush and this may not work but
you may be able to use a mask to define the
placement of the dots and then use a really
large inflation brush with very low z strength
to make a controlled inflation of multiple dots
at once. This is what I would try. ok I turned
on radial symmetry and created dots on a ball
and then flipped the mask and used a really
low strength like 5. it slowly pulled all the
dots up at once so I could see the results.
you may be able to do this without the mask
but I also had my ball at the world center.
Like I said I am a newbie so take it with a
grain of salt.

creo que esto es lo que quiere lograr
consegui esta textura que convertida en imagen_alpha podria funcionar

good!!! :+1:

That looks great Jotajota! but how did you do it?

Gracias amigos! Some interesting ideas here and I will try them out.

Ideally what i would like is to make a cluster of lenses arranged carefully, then position snapshots of this cluster all over the eyeball. Perhaps this would avoid uneven parts in the pattern as well as being quick to do. If I can find a way to save a cluster of seperate spheres as a ZTool file, this would become possible. I will also find out about stencils. I dont know much about them but perhaps they might be another possibility.

Here is a closeup of los ojos. In the Left one you can see the pattern becomes irregular in places, but it looks OK on the Right, after I applied inflat as Jotajota has done. The uneven parts are less obvious.

Its a fantasy grub thing, btw. I will probably scale it 3ft in length. I am a newbie too Strongarm, so thanks for your contribution.

maybe creating and multi-marking spheres together how you want them to create your cluster…then skinning and saving as a tool will to what you are looking for? I haven’t had a chance to try it and see if that would work but it would give you control over placement of the spheres in the cluster.
