Complete idiot-proof guide to disp maps required please!

Hi there,

I know I may be posting the 1400th topic about this but I can’t even begin to work out how to export displacement maps from Zbrush.

I’m using 3.12 and almost every guide I’ve found is either too complex for complete beginners, or it refers to out of date versions.

I haven’t been using Zbrush long but I got my first model to a point I would like to try it in either Max or C4D (whichever is easiest) but I failed.

My model was created in Zbrush with Zspheres as oppose to being initially modelled in another package.

So could anyone kindly explain the steps from finished model in Zbrush, to low poly model in Max (or C4D) along with higher sub-d disp map ready to drop into the material.

Or altenatively point me in the direction of a tutorial that explains it for someone who’s brand new to it all!

Many thanks

Thanks for the reply and link.

I had in fact seen that guide but the problem is, I can’t seem to find the ‘ADE’.

Also, I’m using the Mac version of 3.12 and most guides refer to the Tool>Texture menu palette, which is non-existent in the Mac version. I am guessing it’s replacement is the Tool>Texture Map palette but the options contained in that palette differ entirely. This is why I am struggling because while I have actually seen a number of guides, they refer to either older versions or the Windows version.

Thanks again.

The links assume you are using windows, creating the displacement map with the displacement exporter which is not available for 3.12. The displacement is now all from the Displacement Map tab under the tools menu. You need to have a UV map created externally or in ZBrush and created a texture.

Thanks,

Some of my confusion definitely seems to have come from the difference in versions and platform differences.

So assuming I have created the model solely in Zbrush and not imported an existing mesh, how would I create the UV’s and texture map inside of Zbrush? One more question, what kind of timeframe can I expect to see for creating a displacement map from a fairly complex humanoid model at the highest subd level? (I don’t have the poly count handy unfortunately) but whenever I attempt to create a high res disp map, it seems to take a long time, so much so I wonder if it has crashed sometimes.

I’m running a 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo, with 4GB RAM and a NVidia 8600M GT if it matters.

Fantastic!

Thanks so much for the video, that solves my problem!

Thanks again.
